What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

What is pelvic physiotherapy

This is a specialized advanced area of physiotherapy that assesses and treats Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD), which can affect men, women, and children at any stage in life.  PFD is a general term that is used to describe a number of conditions that may affect the urinary, reproductive, digestive, sexual, and/or stability systems in the pelvis.

What kind of conditions do we treat?
Conditions that are commonly treated are:

· Bladder issues:  such as incontinence, urinary frequency or urgency (got to go, got to go)
· Bowels problems: for example functional constipation, faecal and flatus incontinence (leakage)
· Pelvic organ prolapses that is the descent of any one of the organs in the pelvic- bladder, bowels, or uterus (women) that is commonly seen in women
· Gynaecological surgery support both pre or post-surgery (such as vaginal reconstructive surgery, hysterectomy)

Prostate Cancer treatment support- both pre and post-operation (for example radical prostatectomy)
· Pelvic pain in both men and women (Including pain with intercourse, and pelvic examinations)

In addition to the specific conditions described we also offer management and treatment in:

  • Pregnancy Care:
    1. Musculoskeletal pain such as pelvic girdle pain, back pain
    2. Active birth preparation
  • Postpartum care:
    1. Pelvic floor recovery
    2. Abdominal separation (rectus diastasis)
    3. Cesarean section recovery
    4. Return to sports and exercise via
      1. Functional assessment program
      2. Pilates – mums and bubs

How can Pelvic Physiotherapy help?
For many of our clients, both men and children having pelvic floor physiotherapy and treatment in this specialized area is life-changing. Unlike a sore arm or leg that is obvious to those around you, pelvic issues are considered taboo to discuss, and as a result, so many people suffer in silence.  Restoration in this area comes in different forms and the most common statements are:

“ I am no longer in pain”
“I can keep up with my kids and have fun such as jump on the trampoline with them!”
“I have completed a marathon without any problems”
“I can leave the house”

Our treatment goes beyond making you feel better but aims to empower you with the knowledge, tools, and strategies you need to live your life to the fullest..
